Helping Hands Community Pantry
About
OUR MISSION
"To provide a place for people to obtain basic food items anonymously while building a sense of community amongst neighbors and changing the perception around hunger."
"You don't have to be homeless to be hungry"
The Helping Hands Community Pantry are unlocked pantries in Chattanooga 37404 neighborhoods, providing 24hr access to basic resources such as non-perishable food items. A basic need some people may otherwise go without. The hope is that these pantries will help empower and educate our neighborhood, while at the same time providing for those who need and invoking empathy on those who give. The contents of the pantries will be donated and maintained by sponsors, residents and local neighbors. They are strategically located for unlimited access and are user friendly.

Inspiration
A PHENOMENAL WOMAN
On April 16th my Mother passed away,
But let me tell a little about her life.
She worked hard day in and day out
To make sure her children were alright.
Although she worked long, 12 hour days,
One day she found her cupboards were bare.
She made herself a promise that day
To never be hungry and always have enough to share.
My Mother continued to work very hard
Feeding our family and some of our friends too.
She even took others into our home
Whatever you needed, she would do.
She was a very tall, very thin woman
But she had a very, very huge heart.
So this Pantry is just a small way
To carry on her legacy and do my part.
Take what you need or donate if you can
Let’s just take care of one another.
Let's accept a Helping Hand.
In honor of Reba D. Swopes, my Phenomenal Mother!!
Who We Are
IUNIKE AND RHONDA STEVENS
Through their experience fostering children at their home in Highland Park, Iunike and Rhonda's eyes were opened to the fact that you do not have to be homeless to be hungry. Inspired by Iunike's late mother’s community work, she wants to install outdoor cabinets in public spaces in each of the neighborhoods in 37404 to be filled with non-perishable food items. The food is donated by the founders and people in the neighborhood. The food is free to take by anyone who may be struggling to feed their families, or who just need a little assistance to make it to the next day. Rhonda and Iunike entered into the Causeway VII challenge and became 1 of 10 winners who wanted to make a change in their neighborhoods. They hope the project will meet a real need, and connect her neighbors.
